Do I have to be strong to kitesurf?

No, because modern kites have very light handling which enables anyone to comfortably fly them. Anyone learning to kitesurf should be reasonably physically fit and comfortable in water.

Do I need my own kites and equipment?

No. All the equipment is supplied - kite, board, harness, buoyancy jacket, helmet, and wetsuit. I recommend you bring a towel and warm clothes for after you get out of the water. Suitable footwear, e.g. trainers, is also recommended for the land-based lesson.

How old do I have to be?

For insurance and safety reasons all students must be 16 years or older.

Am I too old to learn to kitesurf?

You’re never too old to learn, but you do need to be reasonably physically fit.

I have flown a kite with a friend before. Can I join in on the day 2?

The day 1 lesson consists of a lot more than just flying kites. However, after a quick phone conversation I will be able to evaluate your experience and make an individual decision whether I feel a day 2 lesson will be suitable.

How much does a complete beginner kitesurf kit package cost?

There are currently great package deals on-line designed especially for the beginner wanting to become independent. At www.s2as.com there is a wide selection of package deals ranging from 900 - £1400. In addition it will cost approx. £150 - £300 for a high-quality wetsuit, helmet, harness and buoyancy aid.

Isn’t kitesurfing really dangerous?

Kites can produce a huge amount of power. It’s very important to understand how to control this power, which is why it’s strongly recommended for anyone wanting to get into the sport to be taught by a qualified professional. This is why we follow the standards of the International Kitesurf Organisation (IKO) and only teach with IKO level 2 qualified instructors.

What insurance do you provide for your students?

All students are covered during the course by the school’s 3rd party liability insurance.

Do I need experience in other water sports before trying kitesurfing?

No experience is needed to learn to kitesurf. However, people with sporty backgrounds especially with board sports like wakeboarding and snowboarding, or wind-related sports like windsurfing, usually progress quicker.

What can I do to prepare myself for the lesson?

It’s not essential, but practising flying a small 2-line trainer kite in light winds would be valuable experience prior to taking a course. Be sure to bring a towel, sun cream, suitable foot wear for the land based session and sun glasses. MBK are also official retailers for SeaSpec extreme sports sunglasses available to purchase online or during your lesson. http://www.mbk-kitesurf.co.uk/seaspecs/
